Can CBD Oil help me lose weight? Let’s look at the claims and reality.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the eminent complexes derived from the cannabis plant. 40% of the cannabis extract is cannabidiol while the rest is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
CBD is non-psychoactive and does not cause inebriation or produce that euphoric “high” we all hear about.
There are a number of proposed benefits of hemp oil and CBD – including potentially therapeutic properties which have been found to provide relief from pain, inflammation, and depression. CBD interacts with receptors in the body to help the brain in tumbling the effects of inflammation and anxiety.
Research is still being carried out to uncover the full health benefits of CBD oil5.
Obesity or excessive weight is a major health issue rising rapidly all around the world. Our eating habits are resulting in increased weight gain. However, it has been put forward that it may be possible to take CBD for weight loss. Primary research on CBD has shown that one of the benefits of hemp oil and CBD may lie in promoting weight loss, or triggering the responses of the body that support in reducing excessive fat8.
How CBD helps with weight loss.
Preliminary research has proved that even though CBD is not directly effective in reducing excessive fat, it can help in other processes that may lead to weight loss. Studies carried out on animals have shown that CBD oil interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2.
These receptors are present in the lymphoid tissues and brain. They have a key role in the intake of food and the overall metabolic processes of the body. CBD oil can help in boosting the metabolism and imposes a feeling of fullness.
In a study carried out on the rats, CBD effectively reduced weight over a period of two weeks. However, the dose was injected into the rats and not given orally. It was also observed that a higher dose of CBD had a pronounced weight loss effect on the rats.
CBD reduces appetite.
Another study has shown that CBD also reduces the intake of food which will eventually lead to a reduction in weight. People who smoke cannabis report they feel hungrier than normal. This happens because of the presence of THC in the cannabis plant4. However, CBD contains only trace amounts of THC, so it will not cause hunger.
CBD blocks the CB1 receptors that stimulate the appetite. Once the CB1 receptors are not effective it may prevent the urge to overeat. Even though no direct studies show the effect of CBD in reducing appetite in humans, scientists are still hopeful that it will be equally effective.
CBD helps in browning of the fat in the body.
You probably know already that the human body contains two types of fat.
Brown fat helps in heat generation and it occurs by burning calories. Having more brown fat is healthier than having excessive white fat. The body transforms the bad fat to good through different practices such as adequate sleep, exercise and exposure to cold temperature6.
Another of the benefits of hemp oil and CBD products is that they help in the browning of the fat molecules by enhancing the expression of the ‘browning’ genes and regulatory proteins. These studies are still to be carried out on humans.
HOW CBD REDUCES METABOLIC DISORDERS.
Research has shown that obesity is closely linked with metabolic disorders such as high blood pressure, high levels of bad cholesterol and diabetes type II2. The cannabinoid receptors may be over-activated, causing metabolic disorders. Blocking the CB1 receptors reduces the chances of obesity and ailments. Studies carried out on rats showed a reduction in the level of blood sugar and cholesterol3.
Should I Take CBD for Weight Loss?
Even though it is unclear if CBD oil is safe for weight loss in humans, it is still being used around the world to lose excessive fat. Until proper research is carried out in this field, we cannot say whether it is or isn’t safe to use for your weight loss journey, or indeed if aiding weight loss is one of the proven benefits of hemp oil and CBD products.
